Chicago is owner to 52 Bascule style bridges throughout the city, the highest concentration of movable bridges in the world. The bascule bridge connecting Franklin and Orleans Street, at 360 feet, is one of Chicago’s longest. After 80 years of service, the bridge was completely rehabilitated in 2001. Divane Bros. Electric Co. provided the various, demanding electrical tasks from the DC power rectifiers required to lift the two section bridge to the numerous control cables and terminations necessary to provide safe operation from either of the two historic bridge houses located on the north and south side of the Chicago River. The intricate control system ensures in sync closure of the two halves of the bridge within a quarter of an inch making it safe for vehicles and pedestrians to cross the river in the busy downtown Chicago. |
